Aranzadi Society of SciencesHerpetological Observatory

Who We Are

The Aranzadi Society of Sciences, although founded in 1947, had not quite worked on the field of Herpetology till the beginning of the 80's. During this decade, some studies were published in specialized journals, reaching a great importance since they were pioneers in the regional Herpetology and thus, they became a reference for the Basque Country and the neighbouring areas. We shall point out the "Atlas de los Anfibios y Reptiles de Álava, Vizcaya y Guipúzcoa" (Atlas of the Amphibians and Reptiles of Alava, Vizcaya and Guipuzcoa) of 1985 and the "Atlas de distribución de los Anfibios y Reptiles de Navarra" (Atlas of the Amphibian- and Reptile-distribution in Navarra) of 1994.

At the end of the 90's, the Society renewed its commitment to herpetological conservation by organizing the "I Jornadas Internacionales de Conservación de Anfibios" (I. International Conferences on Amphibian Conservation) in Donostia-San Sebastian in 2002, that boosted people's interest on the field and got students and young graduates close to the work team.

In October 2006, the Observatory of Herpetology was set up, as the only expert group in the Intercantabric-Pyrenean region.
